20% Project – Week 6: Crocheting

This week I started the strawberry! I planned to give it to a new baby cousin, but I never finished it!! So sad. I also made a few granny squares. A granny square is a technique for crocheting in a round for the center. They are just fun and easy to do, but I’m not sure what I’ll do with them yet.

So the pattern for the strawberry online. I didn’t plan to do the strawberry actually, but I was showing a friend the pattern and I got excited about it! I got most of the body done, and I just need to get some more yarn to finish it off. The challenge this week is having enough yarn. I keep running out of certain colors and need my parents to take me to the store! The success this week was just the pure joy of crocheting and stealing yarn from my Nana. (Just kidding – she said I could take it.)

20% Project- Week 5

I

This week I began working on a bunny project. I completed the body and the head. The parts that were challenging were attaching the legs to the body. It was a really nice project and was so much easier since I had done the elephant. It was a lot of the same stitches and pattern. I was excited that it was getting so much easier.

The pattern I used was found online. The struggles I had were the patterns. The first one Lila showed me didn’t have any instructions at all. But I went to the website- a sketchy ad popped up, so I didn’t want to buy it because I was afraid it was spam. Many other websites were similar, copied and pasted patterns that didn’t match the product. I finally found one that worked on Pinterest. This whole thing set me back a few days because I didn’t have great instructions. I had to undo and redo my work a few times.

In conclusion, I think this was a successful week overall and I hope it continues next week!

Happiness and Satisfaction

This post has a very strong message. The kid on the left had tons of stuff and looks very spoiled and very ungrateful. Like many toys, and a tv in the background. The kid is crying despite her has everything he could possibly want, but still wants more. Whereas the kid on the left look happy and grateful and satisfied. This kid doesn’t look like he has much though, he has no shoes on, he’s outside, he’s playing with the only toy it look like he has, and he looks like her made is, he lives in a hut, and it looks hot and dry, but yet he looks really happy. This demonstrates that happiness in life depend on what you think is enough. This is a good message to live by because you should be happy for what you have.

Middle School Memories

This year in middle school I have made great memories, here are three. My first memory is the the dance I planned in leadership. I had a lot of fun because working at the event is more fun than the event itself. I got to sell candy, and my teacher bought this really horrible candy that didn’t taste good and was really spicy, and we got a lot of people in my class to try it, and there reactions were hilarious. My second memory is the first volleyball tournament we had. It was perfect because I had a team I really liked, and the weather was perfect because it wasn’t too hot so I didn’t sweat that much. I didn’t really like that we only got to play twice though, but I got to eat at the snack bar so that was a plus. My third memory is meeting Lyla. I wasn’t originally planning to sit with her in Miss Moffat class, I was planning to sit with my friend Heidi, but all the spinning chairs were taken, so I had to sit at the dining table, a table that used to be Miss Moffat’s actual dining table. That’s when I met Lyla and became good friends with her fast. She is one of the best students I know, and we did a few group projects together that I have great memories from, like us laying on the floor to get our paper princess’s elbows just right. We have continued to sit together every day, even when our other table members moved. I will miss my 7th grade class next year and will always remember this year.

20% Project – Week 3: Crocheting

This week I accomplished the body for my new elephant. This week I restarted my elephant for my teacher because I was really unhappy with how the first on came out. It all ready looks so much better! I struggled this week because I was trying to make up time for the first on being a fail. I learned this week what kind of yarn to use and what not to use, and what size crochet hooks I need for certain projects. To stay on track this week I need to work extra hard on my elephant to make up time for the time lost. I’m really enjoying learn how to do more intricate things instead of uneven and unfinished scarfs that I crocheted in the past. Next week I am going to start and hopefully finish the trunk, head, and ears for my elephant. I really hope I am able to finish the elephant next week.

20% Project – Week 4: Crocheting

This week was a success because I finished the head, trunk, and tail for the elephant. I am really happy with my elephant because it looks so much better and it was so much easier the second time. One problem I had was that I ran out of the color of yarn that I used, but luckily I had another color to stitch it together. The yarn was a pretty purple. It was my first time stitching something together, and it looks bad where I started, and I should have started at the bottom where it was less noticeable, but I did it right in the middle on top of the head. I did end up doing better near the bottom, but it didn’t matter much there. Next week I am going to start make crochet animals for my friends. The first thing I am going to crochet is a bunny for my friend Lyla, and her favorite animal is a bunny. She sits next to me in core class. I am on track with my plan for the project.

The Best Neighbors

There are many ways to be a good neighbor. My friend Lyla is a good example. She sits next to me in core class. She is kind and thoughtful, and those traits make a good neighbor. Another example are neighbors that live next to you. My neighbors brought us cookies and invited my brother and I to swim at their house. You don’t have to bring your neighbors cookies to be a good one but you should be thoughtful and kind to your neighbors. Like not being rude to them, or playing music really loud, or parking in their parking spot. It’s not hard to be a good neighbor, just be nice!

20% Project – Week 2: Crocheting

This week I made the body for an elephant that I’m making for my teacher. This week I made the body for the elephant I’m making for my teacher. I also learned how to do a few stitches, like invisible decreases, increases, and more. I miss understood the instructions for the elephant though, so I connected the legs wrong. I then improvised to try and fix the mistake I made, but by doing that I messed up the pattern. I didn’t realize that you had to decrease every few times, getting lower each time, because I didn’t watch the video that far. I also think I used the wrong size crocheting needles because there are a lot of holes and you can see the stuffing. Then I lost all the crocheting needles I had, so that set me back a lot. Next week I am going to restart my project. I still think I will stay on track if I work extra hard and fast next week. I got new bigger yarn and new crocheting needles to start it again next week.

Crocheting Prep – 20% Project, Week 1

Hello, my name is Izzy. My idea for the 20% project was learning how to crochet different types of projects. I hope to make stuffed animals and clothing like shirts. I already know how to crochet but I don’t know how to make stuffed animals or clothing. While I couldn’t start the project, I researched and found a pattern for an elephant on youtube, but I went back and forth on multiple different patterns for the best one. I’m planning to make an elephant for my core teacher, Miss Moffat. This week for the 20% project I did not accomplish anything. This week I did not get much done because I temporarily lost my yarn and other crocheting materials. The adjustments I made to stay on track was finding the yarn. I left the week with unused yarn. Next week I hope to finish my first stuffed animal or at least finish the body.

Rad Reading- March

Rad Reading Checklist

That’s Not What Happened by Kody Keplinger is a book about a school shooting. This story is set a few years after her best friend was shot and killed in the bathroom beside her. Everyone thought Sarah declared her faith before being killed, when actually it was someone else, someone who no one expected to have faith. Only LeeAnn knows the truth that day, that Sarah didn’t really proclaim her faith that someone else did. LeeAnn has to decide to tell the truth about what happened that day or keep her silence. I liked the book because it had a complex plot that really got me thinking. It is very relevant in today’s climate, but since it was about the aftermath and not the actual event it was as scary as it might have been.

My favorite character was the blind student who experienced loss and fear that day. He was funny and positive even in a really dark situation. At the beginning of the book, the author says, “Denny grinned, and for the first time that morning, I felt this fleeting moment of calm.” This shows that he was an important part of Lee’s story as she tells about this time in her life.

My favorite quote from the book is “It’s a good story. And you know what people like way more than the truth? A good story.” This quote is meaningful to me because it’s the plot, the story about what happened in that bathroom is more important, more interesting than the truth.
